DISSERTATION AND PROPOSAL WRITING WORKSHOPS Saturday, October 17, 2009

October 17, 2009
12:00 amto5:00 pm

Vanderbilt Ph.D. students are invited to register for one of two free half-day
workshops designed to help students make effective and productive use of their
writing time, work through writing blocks, and complete the writing project for
either the proposal or dissertation. Topics will include: effectively articulating
the point or central claim of one’s project, situating one’s work in the field,
creating a workable writing plan, and sustaining productivity.

Workshop leaders are faculty writing consultants and administrators of Vanderbilt’s
Writing Studio: Katherine Fusco, Ph.D., Jennifer Holt, Ph.D., and Gary Jaeger, Ph.D.

The Dissertation Writing Workshop will take place from 9:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
and the Proposal Writing Workshop will take place from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Preference for the Dissertation Writing Workshop will be given to Ph.D. students who
are at or near the writing stage of their dissertations, and preference for the
Proposal Writing Workshop will be given to students in the second or third years of
their Ph.D. programs. If you are selected to attend a workshop, you will be provided
with additional details, including the workshop location.
Registration for each workshop is limited to 75 Ph.D. students. To request a space
in one of the workshops, please follow the appropriate link and complete the
application survey before 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6. Admission to the
workshops will be confirmed via email on Friday, October 9, 2009.

Writing Letters of Recommendation Workshop

Graduate Students:
The Writing Studio presents a brownbag workshop on
Writing Letters of Recommendation
Wednesday, October 7

Because graduate students at Vanderbilt often lead discussion sections or teach small classes, undergraduates early in their careers often ask them to write letters of support for RA positions, internships, and study abroad programs. With this in mind, and realizing that graduate students will continue writing recommendations as they progress in their careers, the Writing Studio offers a workshop featuring faculty and graduate student panelists discussing the challenges of writing letters of recommendation, including writing for one’s best student, writing for a student about whom one feels ambivalent, writing for a shy student, etc. Please bring your lunch and your questions about writing recommendations.

Panelists: Derek Bruff, Carolyn Cusick, Josh Epstein, and Roger Moore
