Graduate Student Roundtable

Coming this April, the Graduate Student Council will be holding a Graduate Student Roundtable in which a broad theme with interdisciplinary implications will be discussed among faculty as well as graduate students. This is to be a change in format from the previously held Graduate Student Research Symposium. Due to declining attendance and high costs, it has been decided that the switch to a more scaled-down event that will hopefully provide an enriching and meaningful experience to participants as well as continue in the tradition of offering graduate students the opportunity to improve presentation skills and foster cooperation between the diverse array of fields that compose the Graduate School.

The event will take place within a half-day. First, the roundtable will be opened up with a panel of professors from various disciplines giving brief talks about work that they have done that holds relevance towards the chosen topic. Then, there will be a dinner buffet combined with a poster session, where there will be ample time for students to speak among each other about their research projects. Finally, a keynote speaker invited from outside Vanderbilt will close the event.

Central to this event is the selection of both speakers and a topic. This is where YOU can have input. I would like to form a committee of a set of graduate students representing as wide of a sample of departments as possible. The time commitment should be around 10-15 hours (4-5 meeting with FREE food, then set-up and take-down for the event itself). To form a part of this committee, please e-mail trevor.j.lyons@vanderbilt.edu. The committee’s first meeting will be the week of January 23-27. Membership will be on a first-come, first-serve basis, capped at 10 with preference given towards having members from as broad of a range of programs as possible.

The committee will select the topic for the Roundtable, as well as select the speakers. The author of the winning proposal will be formally acknowledged at the event, and will also receive a $50 gift card to a local business (TBD). Proposals for the topic should present the following:

1) A brief tagline summarizing the topic, followed by a deeper explanation.

2) Concrete ties this topic has with different academic disciplines and programs that Vanderbilt graduate students are a part of.

3) Relevant faculty members as well as possible outside speakers who would be appropriate for the event.

Proposals should be submitted to trevor.j.lyons@vanderbilt.edu by January 20.

The Graduate Student Council looks forward to the inaugural session of this new event, and eagerly anticipates your input.

Have a great winter break!
