Research Symposium
23rd Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium
Student Life Center, Vanderbilt University
Monday, March 30, 2009
The Graduate Student Council is pleased to announce the 23rd annual Graduate Student Research Symposium (GSRS)! The interdisciplinary conference for graduate students of all departments will be held on Monday, March 30th from 9am-5pm in the Student Life Center. This research symposium provides an opportunity for all graduate students to present their original research and receive positive feedback from fellow colleagues and faculty in an interdisciplinary and diverse setting. Therefore, we encourage all faculty, staff and fellow graduate and undergraduate students to participate by attending the poster session or one of the many interdisciplinary oral presentation panels throughout the day in support of graduate education here at Vanderbilt. All attendees that fill out a survey will be eligible to win one of several door prizes!
The presentation panels are interdisciplinary in nature, encompassing 4-6 graduate students delivering a 15 minute presentation on research focused around a central topic. A single poster session with graduate students from a range of disciplines will occur from 11am-1pm in Ballroom A of the SLC (refreshments will be served).

The end of our research symposium will be marked with a keynote address delivered by Dr. Susan Basalla, co-author of the book, So What Are You Going To Do With That? Finding Careers Outside Academia. Dr. Basalla’s keynote address is titled, “What Every Graduate Student Should Know About Jobs Outside Academia” and will occur at 4:10pm in Ballroom C of the SLC. A free copy of her book will be distributed to the first 150 graduate students with a book signing and reception immediately following the address.
GSRS Presenter Information
Registration:
Registration will be from 8:30-9:00am in the lobby of the SLC. If you cannot make the registration time, please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled session to pick up your registration materials and to receive any additional instructions.
Oral Presentation Guidelines:
If you are planning on using a PowerPoint presentation during the day’s events, please email your presentation file (label your attachment according to this format: Panel title abbreviation_last name) to Molly by Wednesday, March 25th. In order to ensure that your PowerPoint will run on the computers provided, please be sure that you save your presentation in PowerPoint 2003 (.ppt) format. All presentations will then be uploaded onto the conference room computers as a backup. Therefore, please do bring your presentation with you on the day of the presentation. (Also, we do not provide laser pointers.)
Presentations will be limited to 15 minutes with a 5-minute question and answer period, for a total of 20 minutes. Please arrive to your presentation room prior to the start time of your panel in order to discuss with your moderator and fellow presenters the order of the presentations (or discuss prior to the symposium).
Poster Presentation Guidelines:
There will be a single poster session from 11am-1pm in Ballroom A this year. Note that each presenter is expected to present your poster for one of the two hours, so please see the attached schedule for your assigned presentation hour. Feel free, however, to stay for the entire two hours! In addition, a presentation panel will be held in Ballroom A from 9:00-10:45, so please attend Registration from 8:30-9:00am in order to hang up your poster and receive any further instructions. Due to the layout of poster boards this year, all boards will be labeled with ‘Session 1’ or ‘Session 2’, so please hang your poster on a board corresponding to your session. All posters should be a maximum size of 4’x6’. We will provide both poster boards and thumbtacks.
Door Prizes and Travel Grants:
To thank you for your participation in this event, all presenters will be eligible to win one of two FREE travel grants courtesy of the Graduate School and all students attending the conference that fill out a survey will be eligible to win monetary door prizes courtesy of the Graduate Student Council.
