FALL 2009

Welcome New and Returning Students to Fall Semester

Check out the new Club Blog

The Vanderbilt University Kung Fu Club meets on Monday and Thursday nights in the mat room of the VU Recreation Center. We welcome new students to our club and can assure you that we have a great group that trains in a positive environment. We train in the arts of Chen Tai Chi, Chuan, Pa Kua, Chang, Walu, and other great Chinese Boxing arts that emphasize realistic self - defense. Of course these arts are also excellent for maintaining and improving one's overall health. We welcome students at all levels including beginners and those from other martial arts backgrounds. We will teach our first few classes in a way that will give new students a good sample of how we train.Sifu Joe Rea Phillips serves as the instructor and faculty adviser of the club. However, he has been very fortunate to have had assistance from Max Lucas for many years. Max is a Senior Student of Sifu Phillips and is highly qualified in Pa Kua Chang, Tai Chi Chuan, and Chinese Boxing. His assistance through the years has made a significantly positive impact on the club. The club has also been enriched by the leadership of Patrick Taylor, who is another Senior Student of Sifu Phillips. Rowena Ong is the President of the club and does a fantastic job in many areas. She also has trained in Chinese Boxing for several years and currently holds the rank of Brown Sash.

Fall Seminar

Our seminar on the weekend of September 25-26 with Professor Cravens was a great success. I was very pleased with the participation of all club members. We also had the pleasure of having Max Lucas, Patrick Taylor, and Scott Outten join us for the event. We enjoyed working on Walu form II, Laojia applications, and on Saturday afternoon a smaller group worked on Laojia’s Pao Cui. Professor’s patient teaching and overall martial arts insight is tremendous and we very much appreciate his commitment to us.
