As an important
member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the
American Red Cross mobilizes and educates communities within the United
States as well as worldwide to overcome life-threatening vulnerabilities .
The main areas of focus for the American Red Cross International Services
are global health, restoring family links during times of war, disaster
preparedness and response, and International Humanitarian Law (IHL)
dissemination.
IHL
dissemination
International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is a set of rules that seek to
protect those who do not or no longer participate in hostilities and
restrict the means and methods of warfare. The United States has an
obligation to teach IHL to its armed forces and to the civilian
population. As a part of our mission, the American Red Cross helps to
educate the American public.
Our goal is to offer IHL courses and then go on to provide training
opportunities for IHL instructors. If there is enough interest among
students we shall also work towards making EHL (Exploring Humanitarian
Law) a course formally offered to the undergraduate student body at
Vanderbilt. This is a Pilot Program from the National Youth Council. We
are the first university in the country to hold a IHL Training! These
classes will be capped at 20 people. ARC members will receive 4 hours
toward membership.

Global Health:
The Measles Initiative
Measles is one of the leading killers of children worldwide. Approximately
540 children will die each day from the disease. Yet it costs less
than a dollar to vaccinate a child. In February 2010 we shall host a
fundraiser, the proceedings of which will all go toward the Measles
Initiative. Each dollar we raise will save a life.
