History of Nashville
Nashville, Tennessee is named after Revolutionary War hero General Francis Nash (1742-1777). It became the capital of Tennessee in 1843. Nashville's reputation as "Music City USA" began in the 1920s, when WSM radio launched the WSM Barn Dance (later known as the Grand Ole Opry). The "Nashville Sound" emerged in the 1950s and Music City now boasts a multitude of performers, recording companies, nightclubs, concert venues, recording studios, studio musicians, music publications and music publishers.
