Mission Statement: We Preach Jesus Christ and Not Ourselves (II Corinthians 4:5) The vision was shared at a Black Student Alliance meeting to gauge interest. BSA President, Carolyn Pitt, supported the idea and allowed the group to operate under the BSA umbrella. Founding members, Stephanie, Kim, and LaTrice, soon met Kito Huggins, a talented musician and director, and he instantly joined the vision to form the ministry. There were significant accomplishments during the years under the leadership of the founding members. In 1995 the leadership team lobbied to Vanderbilt Student Affairs to become recognized as an official student organization and receive University funding. Up until this time the group had to operate under the auspices of the BSA to reserve rehearsal space, concert space, and utilize any other University resources. The initial funds were used to purchase choir robes and fund concerts that were held during the 1995-96 school year. During commencement in 1996, Stephanie, LaTrice, Kimberly, and Kito were awarded with the 1996 Trailblazer Award for the vision that became Voices of Praise. Thanks be to God for allowing this ministry to continue far beyond what the original founders ever dreamed! Today Voices of Praise is made up of a gospel choir, step team, spoken word and dance team. For current members, former members, and future members to come, the prayer is that Voices of Praise will continue to be a outlet of spiritual expression for Vanderbilt and a ministry that impacts the campus and community for the Glory of God!
