Presentation of Resolutions, Speaker O’Neill

  • Resolution 11-12-23: Regarding the Number of Signatures on Campus Wide Petitions
    • Technical Questions
      • Are the 500 signatures every year or will it be based off the percentage?
        • Set number of 500
  • Debate
    • Speaker Kenny Tan
      • Same goals as what was voted down last week
      • Have our minds really changed?
      • Goes against amendment from last year that required experience for eligibility
      • Urge to unanimously vote no
    • Speaker’s rebuttal
      • Not the intention
      • Re-wrote this after listening to what concerns were last week
      • Changed so only the student body president is a campus-wide election—this is different from years past, and should reflect the number of signatures
      • Worked to compromise with what was said last week
      • Chairman is outside of VSG, so not usurpation of political power
      • 500 signatures is minute, not a large number
    • Speaker Kenny Tan
      • Mentioned that this is significantly different, but it isn’t
      • Not qualification of presidency
    • Speaker Floyd
      • Cautioning that we be civil to one another
    • Speaker Jonathan
      • Part of office of presidency is that he or she be visible to student body
    • Peer institutions have similar number of signatures required
    • Speaker Kenny Tan
      • State of Tennessee—requires 25 signatures for running for office
      • Drastic difference
      • Agree that getting signatures is test of dedication
      • However, should not be cut off point for anyone’s candidacy
    • Speaker’s rebuttal
      • Use A&S as most extreme examples
      • Campus-wide election should be held to higher standard so that’s why changing number of signatures

      • If someone did not obtain the signatures they still have opportunity to be a write in

      • Stress importance that allow all undergrads to serve in VSG
      • That is why we have primary

    • Group going to SEC Exchange tomorrow
    • Election Commission applications are out and due Friday at 5p
    • AcFee applications are also due on Friday at 5p
    • Co-Sponsorship Update, Executive Vice President Manard
      • Mannafit (Co-Sponsorship of the Month) is Tuesday, January 31st
      • Upcoming VSG Events
        • CPC: Friday Night Sights on January 27 (Ice Skating at Centennial Sportsplex)
