Presentation of Resolutions by Aladine

Resolution 1 Timeline

  • Candidates Info Meeting Occurs Sunday before spring break (not mandatory)
  • Interest meeting must occur no more than 2 weeks before campaiging
  • Campaigning can’t last more than 1.5 weeks
  • Campaigning will begin Monday morning after spring break
  • Primary election from 8:00am Thursday to 12pm Friday
  • A question about a typo
  • Roll Call vote of Senate passes unanimously
  • Roll Call vote of House passes unanimously

Resolution 2 Finances

  • People running may fund their own campaign in full
  • No limit on donations to campaign from undergrad students
  • Kenny asks a question about parents funding
  • Lucas responds by saying that the line was written to prevent corporate sponsorships
  • SPC wanted to create a rule that follows historical patterns
  • People should still report from where they receive funding
  • Eliminates outside fundraising
  • Question about spending cap- it is the same 500dollars as before
  • Roll Call Vote in Senate unanimously passes
  • Roll Call in House unanimously passes

Resolution 3 Negative Campaigning

  • People campaigning should not negative campaigning
  • Negative campaigning is defined
  • Landis asks questions about the line that marks negative campaigning
  • Some subjectivity but personal attacks not allowed
  • Only record and facts can be stated
  • Who decides negative campaigning? Attorney General + Election Commission
  • What about facts about character? Try to keep things relevant to competency
  • How will negative campaigning be punished? Subject to Election Commission
  • What about loose associations negative campaigning? Resolutions address this
  • Can you call people out about GPA or Conduct? Nope
  • How does this affect people outside of campaign teams? Again other resolutions define this
  • Roll Call Senate unanimously passes
  • Roll Call House unanimously passes

Resolution 4 Campaign Teams

  • Campaign team only 10 vandy undergrads
  • Campaign team is only allowed to contribute content
  • Endorsements must come after campaigning
  • Painters and workers are not a part of campaign team but may not contribute to content or decisions
  • Does this include Vice President? Nope
  • Names of campaign members must be submitted
  • Can we bounce ideas off others? 3 types of people those who help with content, workers, and roommates or close friends not contributing to content but are allowed to talk with candidate
  • This resolution deals specifically to those who are involved in decisions
  • Can’t have campaign team until declaration meeting
  • Can new members be added and subtracted? Addition only if you start at a deficit but no subtraction
  • E.g. for I.E.
  • How can Election Commission enforce this?  It is a serious violation
  • What if you are not aware of people campaigning for you? Case by case bases
  • Debate about 2 week time period
  • Mark Cherry doesn’t like length of time for campaign prep
  • One of those weeks is spring break
  • Zye says this is enough time
  • Worries about painting time and materials
  • Discussion Zye and adam talk about their experience
  • Senate – unanimous passing
  • House – unanimous passing

Resolution 5 Endorsements

  • Endorsements must specify the manner that they pass
  • Endorsements must be turned in before posted
  • Tag line before individual endorsements
  • Endorsements are limited to those than can vote
  • Seeking Endorsements counts as campaigning before the deadline
  • Senate Roll Call- unanimously passes
  • House Roll Call- unanimously passes

Resolution 6 Regarding Student Body President Petitions

  • Student body president must get about 700 signatures
  • Only Campaign Team and Ticket can work on this
  • Will this be unrealistic?  SPC doesn’t think so
  • Who can get signatures? Just the 12 people

Mark cherry states that this is just extra

Adam says candidate viability is the reason

Broder says more chance for violations

Roll Call Vote Senate- passes (5-4)

House Debate

Lauren Holroyd says this is a step back for openness

Aladine rebuttal speaks to candidate viability

Adam says people will be more inclined to vote

Quality vs Quantity?

House Votes- fails (10-10-1)

Resolution 7 Election violations

  • Defines minor vs major violations
  • Punishments levels stated
  • All violations ruled on by Election Commission
  • Violations Outside the campaign team are minor unless intent is involved
  • Loose associations/ no associations? Candidate may have to ask person to stop
  • These cases will be decided case by case
  • Senate – unanimously passes
  • House- Unanimously passes
