- Debate: Motion to move to previous question
- Resolution passes
- Resolution S 11-12-24: Recognition and Appreciation for MLK Day 2012 University Committee
- Technical Questions: None
- Debate: Motion to move to previous question
- Resolution passes
- Resolution H/S 11-12-25: Resolution Endorsing the Creation of a Student Rights Committee
- Technical Questions in House and Senate:
- Speaker McKittrick: How do you envision this committee functioning on a day-to-day basis?
- Speaker Tan: Similar to other committees with scheduled meetings, students could e-mail the group with questions, etc.
- Speaker Landis: Have there ever been a case where a student was denied due process that would bring about a reason for this?
- Speaker Tan: No such case where denied counsel, but concern is that there is no automatic advisor provided
- Speaker Brennan: Was the Honor Council consulted?
- Speaker Tan: Showed Exec board, Office of Student Conduct, and administrators. But not the honor council.
- Speaker DiPanfilo: What do you mean by due process?
- Speaker Tan: Having fair trial and students to answer questions
- Speaker Cherry: How would students be trained?
- Speaker Tan: Students on committee would have to be familiar with the student handbook
- Speaker McKittrick: How would the other senator be selected?
- Speaker Tan: It could be up to Exec to decide whether a currently elected senator would be leading committee
- Speaker Roteta: How many people would be on the committee? Would there be an application process?
- Speaker Tan: Exec would decide
- Speaker Babbage: What is the current process for seeking an advisor?
- Speaker Tan: This would be more of a supplement
- Speaker Babbage: What did Dean Bandas say about his plan?
- Speaker Tan: He read this resolution and it would function similarly to Honor Council
- Speaker Neely: How much money would be budgeted for this committee?
- Speaker Tan: Whatever the cost would be for providing brochure for incoming students. Contingency fund in VSG which is $10,000 and imagine would not be needing anywhere close to that
- Speaker Landis: Would this appointment of an advisor apply more to student conduct because honor council already assigns advisor?
- Speaker Tan: This would be optional for students. May feel more comfortable talking to someone from VSG rather than honor council
- Speaker Landis: How many cases come before student conduct?
- Around 100 per year
- Speaker McKittrick: Are there a lot of issues of student rights that need to be addressed?
- Speaker Tan: Well the freedom of religion issue would be one
- Speaker Neely: Are you aware that the SPC is meeting this week to discuss committee reforms?
- Speaker Tan: Yes
- Speaker Neely: How is this different from your work with YAL and FIRE?
- Speaker Tan: It would be more effective if there were a committee for all students
- Questioning legality based on national privacy policy—committee would do whatever would need to be done to be legal (e.g. quiz)
- Speaker McKittrick: How do you envision this committee functioning on a day-to-day basis?
- Technical Questions in House and Senate:
- Debate in House:
- Speaker Neely: With all due respect, this is becoming nothing more than a kind of mouthpiece for the work that you do on the side for a different organization. I move to table the resolution until the SPC returns with committee reforms.
