This Saturday, February 25 at 8 PM in Langford Auditorium, Spirit of Uganda: A Project of Empower African Children is coming to Vanderbilt, and tickets are on only $5 on the card (at the Sarrat box office or at the door)! Vandy undergrads Michael Feldman, Nick Hall, and Will Stokes have all witnessed and worked with Spirit of Uganda while doing service work in Kampala, Uganda.

On tour, 22 performers, ages 8–18, share the histories, legends and beliefs of Uganda and represent 2.4 million orphans.
VSFF was started six years ago by the Office of the Dean of Students. It features exclusively Vanderbilt students’ work. For the first three years, the Festival screened all work that was submitted, in a non-competitive environment. However, that was changed two years ago when Professor Jonathan Rattner joined the Film Studies Program Faculty. Professor Rattner spearheaded the initiative to make the festival student-run and competitive. This is the third year that the festival has been planned and conceptualized by a student committee.

On Tuesday, February 21st, the VSG CommonDores will be gathering for the February CommonDores Dinner. In the 5th dinner of the speaker series, the CommonDores will be meeting Brett Sweet, the Vanderbilt University Vice Chancellor for Financial Affairs and CFO. Dr. Paul Lim, Faculty of Head of House for Crawford, will be representing the FHOHs in the speaker series. On the student side, VSG Speaker of the House Melissa O’Neill and the Black Student Alliance President and Vice President, Brittany Watts and Bronson Worthy, will be presenting on student leadership and providing advice for the first years.

The group was first addressed by Brett Sweet, the aforementioned Vice Chancellor for Financial Affairs and CFO of the University. Mr. Sweet provided the group a survey of the finances of the institution as well as distinguished the Medical Center from the Academic Center of the campus and the different financial concerns of each. Next, the group was addressed by Dr. Paul Lim, FHOH for Crawford. Dr. Lim discussed the three important “P”s in his life: passion, persistence, and perspective. Dr. Lim shared his unique path to his current position and commented that serving as a FHOH on the Ingram Commons has been one of the most tremendous highlights of his career in academia.

The student segment of the evening was led by leaders from Vanderbilt’s Black Student Alliance (BSA), represented by BSA Vice President Bronson Worthy and Social Chair Ayanna Campbell. They discussed the role of the BSA on campus and its activities, encouraging any and all students as future leaders to not hesitate in reaching out to the BSA in their organizations. Finally, VSG Speaker of the House Melissa O’Neill provided some points of wisdom to the group as it related to striking a balance, making time for what you want to do, and taking the initiative to get involved.

For more information, please contact VSG Director of First Year Relations Elizabeth Pruitt. The final CommonDores Dinner Series event will be held on March 27th. More information will be made available when the speakers for the event are confirmed.

Author of the award-winning book Acts of Faith, Patel is also a regular contributor to the Washington Post, USA Today and CNN. He served on President Obama’s inaugural Advisory Council of the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships and holds a doctorate in the sociology of religion from Oxford University, where he studied on a Rhodes scholarship.

Patel’s core belief is that religion is a bridge of cooperation rather than a barrier of division. He’s inspired to build this bridge by his faith as a Muslim, his Indian heritage, and his American citizenship. He has spoken about this vision at places like the TED conference, the Clinton Global Initiative, and the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, as well as college and university campuses across the country.

Patel will present at 7:00 p.m. in Langford Auditorium on “Acts of Faith: Interfaith Leadership in a Time of Global Religious Crisis”. This event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception and book signing in the auditorium lobby.
