Area Representatives

The House is the larger chamber of the VSG bicameral system and is comprised of 24 Representatives elected by Commons Houses and Upperclassmen Residential Areas in the fall of each year. The House’s responsibilities include representing the best interests of the student body, voicing the concerns of the their residential constituents, voting on all VSG resolutions, and planning programming events for their residential areas.

Commons House Presidents have unique duties to their individual Commons House Councils and Faculty Heads of Houses. All upperclassman residential halls also have elected Presidents who do not have a vote in the House but are involved in local programming efforts and communicating the issues and needs of their residential constituents to the Speaker.

The 24 voting members are presided over by the Speaker of the House, a member of the Executive Board who was elected out of the members of the House of the prior year. The Speaker of the House oversees the local programming efforts of all House Members, Residential Hall Presidents, and VSG Programming Directors.

All VSG resolutions must be passed by both the Senate and the House and must be sponsored by a member of the chamber in which it is presented.

The House convenes biweekly on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm in the Board of Trust Room of the Student Life Center and all meetings are open to the entire student body. Meetings include debate on resolutions, round table discussions of important campus issues, VSG initiative updates, and guest speakers from Vanderbilt administrative offices who provide insight into various University policies, issues, and services. Five minutes is reserved at the beginning of each meeting for any student to voice to their VSG representatives any concerns, ideas, or announcements they may have.
