History of Vanderbilt Students for Students and Students for Students, Inc.
After talking with many students about poverty, college, and their personal situations, it seemed that for most of them attending college was a given. This is not the case for students in low-income families. More often than not, college is not expected. So, after having this dialogue, taking a sociology class concerning poverty, and in addition, being a beneficiary of substantial scholarships upon graduating high school, Rob wanted to help.
In October 2006, Vanderbilt Students for Students (VSS) was finally formed by then sophomore Rob Whiting with the help of several friends. Since the founding, VSS has transformed into Students for Students, Inc, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, with the approval occurring in June 2007. This was prompted primarily by an anonymous donation $2,500 contingent on the organization attaining 501(c)3 status, and the subsequent realization that becoming non-profit would open the door to larger donations and greater opportunities, including the ability to apply for various grants. Students for Students now acts as the umbrella organization for VSS.
VSS has already experienced great successes, such as many small fundraisers, outreach, and our signature event, the Vandy Mile Bonanza. Held in early April, the Mile Bonanza is a Nashville-wide running event with prizes, awards, food, music, and good times. Last year’s inaugural event saw over 150 registrants and raised over $1,500. We anticipate next year’s event to be even better.
Shortly following the Vandy Mile Bonanza in May 2007, the organization awarded the first Vanderbilt Students for Students Scholarship. The amount of $2,000 went to Theresa Nandzo, who is now attending Tennessee State University. We fully expect our organization to build upon these successes, and to have an even greater influence on education in middle Tennessee.
