TN — May 15, 2007 — Theresa Nandzo, a graduating senior at Pearl-Cohn High School, received the 2007 Vanderbilt Students for Students Scholarship, a $2,000 award. Selected out of a competitive pool of applicants, Nandzo’s academic record was a cut above the rest. “I know Theresa will go far at TSU and beyond. Her application shows her dedication and after meeting her here today there is no doubt in my mind”, said VSS President Rob Whiting. The scholarship was awarded to Nandzo at the Pearl-Cohn awards assembly, held in the school’s auditorium. Accompanying Whiting to the ceremony were Secretary Carmen Mims and VSS member Chris Noel. The VSS Scholarship is awarded based on overall achievement, while personal situation is also taken into account. The award is completely fund-raised by the organization’s members, who are all students at Vanderbilt University. Next, the members as a group select the recipient. “Reading the applications was a real eye-opener. A lot of these students have obstacles that we don’t even think about”, said Noel. A native of Ghana, Nandzo came highly recommended by teachers and administrators, and participated in Jobs for Tennessee Graduates and Catholic Youth Organization among other organizations. She will be concentrating in nursing at TSU starting in the fall of 2007. |
