Formula SAE is and international engineering competition sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE.) In the competition, students are presented with the challenge of designing and building a small open wheel racecar that will be evaluated on its feasibility to be sold as a weekend autocross vehicle. During the school year students design and fabricate their car before bringing it to compete against other universities at competitions in Virginia, Michigan, and California as well as six other international sites. At the competition students are judged in the areas of design, cost, and business and race in acceleration, skid pad, autocross, and endurance events.
The competition gives students an edge upon graduating because they are exposed to so many more skills than they are in the classroom. Areas such as design, communication, teamwork, leadership, business and marketing are all highly stressed and important for success. The program has gained a significant reputation and many employers focus primarily on recruiting FSAE graduates.
